"You only love it when you lose it" how perfectly does this quote summarize some mothers food related experiences when pregnant. When growing your lovely babies, sometimes we need to alter our diets and although it's so worth it; It can be so hard to give up some foods, especially the foods we love.
1. Some cheeses
I don't know about you, but cheese is just.... life. I'm a huge cheese fan I'm sure most of you are. Fortunately most everyday cheeses like Cheddar and Parmesan are completely fine to eat when you're pregnant; because they are made from unpasteurized milk. While as soft cheeses like Brie and Camembert and soft blue veined cheeses like Gorgonzola should definitely be avoided when pregnant. The main reason they cheeses should be avoided is because these types of cheeses are made with a type of mould that contains bacteria called Listeria. If Listeria were to enter the body it could turn into an infection and it could cause harm to the baby.
2. Sushi - raw fish/seafood
Some types of sushi are made of raw fish like Sashimi, raw oysters, raw fish and pre-made sushi. As these ingredients haven't been cooked they have a higher chance of carrying bacteria or being contaminated by bacteria; specifically Listeria; just like in the cheeses mentioned. Some alternative forms of sushi you could order are the Maki containing cooked egg/cucumber or avocado and some alternative options like unagi (cooked eel) and or ebi (shrimp). Just make sure everything is cooked properly.
3. Unwashed fruits and vegetables
Many fruits and vegetables that are unwashed carry Toxoplasma parasites; these parasites infect the soil where these fruits and vegetables grow. If you ingest the Toxoplasma parasite they can harm your unborn baby. Always thoroughly wash and rinse all your fruits and vegetables and where possible remove the skins.
